| Meeting Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi is truly a unique experience and privilege. In Her presence, one feels calm, peaceful and completely joyful. All one's thoughts die down into absolute mental silence and yet, the sheer, unmistakable power of Her personality and love shines through in a way that underscores her Divine nature. Shri Mataji was born on March 21, 1923 into a Christian family. Her parents were Prasad and Cornelia Salve, direct descendants of the royal Shalivahana dynasty. Seeing the beauty of this child who was born with a spotless brilliance, they called her Nirmala, which means 'Immaculate'. Shri Mataji was born realized, with a complete understanding of the subtle system and its interaction with the physical human body. However, in order to become acquainted with the scientific terminology behind these phenomena, She studied Medicine and Psychology at the Christian Medical College in Lahore. On May 5, 1970 while deep in meditation upon the plight of mankind, a Divine, spiritual experience filled Her being. She discovered a method by which She could give people the experience of Self Realization, en masse (in multitude). Sahaja Yoga was born.
